The novel RL algorithms like DQN, which have largely enhanced learning efficiency and scalability, are expected to help solve more sophisticated and practical production scheduling problems in the future.

In Ref. [66], a gantry assignment problem in production lines is also formulated as an RL problem and solved by the Q-learning algorithm. In both studies, random factors, such as machine failures in Ref. [66] and product queue lengths in Ref. [65], drive the transition of the system states, which are difficult to obtain the complete state transition models.
